Flooding on Ullswater

After 36hrs of rain Ullswater was in spate, however still not as bad as the floods in Jan 2009. This picture was taken from Ullswater Steamers' Glenridding car park (click on photo for more pictures) where we found Sean of Wild River running a canoe course and making use of the extra water.

A nice day's walk in the Fells
We set off on the 9:45 Ullswater
Steamer to Howtown. We then
summited our first 'Wainwright'
Hallin Fell before dropping back
to the lake and conquering Place Fell
(657m) in the cloud (this was soon
followed by coffee & cake at Side
Farm) before our return to Glenridding.

Climbing at Oxford & Thornhow Crags
We had a bit of a drizzly start at
Oxford Crag for a warm up,
before heading round to Thornhow
Crag to tackle some harder routes.

Helvellyn in the mist
We headed up to Lantys Tarn and walked into the cloud before reaching Birkhouse Moor. Once on a dry Striding Edge we had a quick lunch stop before making Helvellyn summit (950m). After negotiating a snowy Swirral Edge the cloud lifted and we headed for Catstye Cam (890m). Then onto Glenridding where we tried Doris & Helvellyn Gold in The Travellers Rest.

Kirkstone Pass

We took a quick trip up an easy gully and onto the summit of Red Screes, before going to help with an avalanche below St. Sunday.

Winter Skills and Swirral Edge

Charlie spent the morning learning winter skills and techniques. Then we headed over to Helvellyn and went down Swirral Edge in perfect conditions, the cloud even lifted for a spell.

Kilnshaw Chimney

Ali from the White Lion Inn Patterdale and I climbed this grade I/II snow gully, it's only a short walk from the top car park on the Kirkstone Pass. We then went onto the summit of Red Screes and back down the path.

Sticks Pass
I set off from Thirlmere and walked the route of the Sticks Pass to Glenridding. Walking at times was in thigh deep snow and the visibility was 10m over 600m. Just as well because I spent most of the walk looking at a compass!

Place Fell 657m

We went up a small path up the front of Place Fell in thigh deep snow. Once at the summit we headed down via Boredale Hause and the dogs did very well.

The Grisedale Valley

We took a nice afternoon's walk around a very snowy Grisedale Valley and didn't bump into one person!

Inversion over Ullswater

An inversion formed over the lake in the morning so I walked up Glenridding Dodd to take some photos.

Stybarrow Dodd and Raise
We started from Greenside Mine and practiced navigation onto the two summits over 800m. A nice sunny day in the Lakes with some interesting cloud .

Sheffield Pike

First we walked up Glenridding Dodd and then moved onto Sheffield Pike. It was overcast and windy but dry after a few days of rain.

Helvellyn YHA. As it was wet/
windy/cold and the weather
report was to get worse we
moved quickly and didn't stay
on the top for long.

of us. We also (somehow)
found ourselves at The
Travellers Rest enjoying
some Helvellyn Gold at
the end of the day!

and didn't come out until we
successfully walked along Striding &
Swirrl Edge, as well as summitting
Helvellyn & Catstye Cam.

Beginners Rock Climbing
We headed up to Oxford

Crag & climbed a couple of

nice routes, then walked

around to Thornhow for

some longer, harder routes.

Everyone climbed very well

and we had a pleasant windy

day, despite being wet later

on.

We took in 5 peaks over 700m as well as scrambling
along Striding Edge and back to Glenridding in time
for some Helvellyn Gold in the Travellers Rest .

We luckily had perfect weather for our Sunday walking

the Edges and what a great day we had on the fell.

A very wet and windy day on Helvellyn

We did Helvellyn in the rain, hail and snow! Not

to mention gale force winds. However, it was a good

day out on the fell.

is overrun by thousands of
yellow ducks in order to raise
money for the local voluntary
Mountain Rescue Team.
